Gary Douglas: Keepin’ Faith

Lee Zimmerman on February 3, 2016

Gary Douglas is your typical rock-and-roll troubadour, an intrepid journeyman whose sweat-drenched sound reminds one of the usual heartland heroes, Fogerty, Mellencamp and Seger chief among them. On this, his sophomore set, Douglas doesn’t push any parameters, but he also doesn’t pull back from them either, showing his stamina via a sturdy and assertive style.  He’s most effective when he hews to the basics, from the tireless drive of “Out on the Highway,” with its riveting refrains, to the grit and verbosity etched in “Voices,” “Faith (Renewed)” and “My Desire.” Douglas also has his dark side, whether echoing the murderous events that led to Johnny Cash’s tenure in Folsom Prison on “Cold Blood” (“I shot a man today in cold blood…”) or recalling the swagger of the Stones’ “Dead Flowers” on his own “Over You.” Granted, originality isn’t Douglas’ strongest suit and, at times, Keepin’ Faith plays out like a game of name that tune, with obvious emphasis on the familiarity factor. Still, with his blue-collar ethic and staunch determination, all faith is warranted.
