Andy Hall & Roosevelt Collier: Let the Steel Play

Matt Inman on October 18, 2017

Let the Steel Play unites two masters of slide guitar from two very different backgrounds. This collaborative album features the combined forces of The Infamous Stringdusters’ dobroist Andy Hall and “sacred steel” veteran, and member of The Lee Boys, Roosevelt Collier making for some exciting and impressive intertwining riffs, rhythms and melodies. The duo first met while aboard Jam Cruise in 2012, and they have played together at various points since. While Collier—aka “The Dr.”—brings plenty of his House of God-honed pedal-steel influence, Hall’s classic bluegrass flavor is what guides most of these tracks, thanks to the dobro’s overpowering sound. Iconic gospel standard “This Little Light of Mine” opens the record and introduces the collaboration perfectly, with Hall and Collier trading off searing, soaring solos and percussive picking on their respective instruments. “Power in the Blood” also nods to Collier’s church background, while “Rosebud” sees the pedal-steel player falling back into an understated but inspired rhythmic accompaniment. A cover of the Dead’s “Crazy Fingers” shows the duo’s laid-back side, while “The Darkest Hour” sees them dig deep, with Hall’s thick strumming underlying Collier’s ripping, melancholic solos. And just to add an extra flavor of slide to the project, Greensky Bluegrass dobroist Anders Beck makes an appearance on the bluesy, rollicking final track, “Colfax Boogie.”
