On Wednesday at The Cutting Room in New York City, the first of two Help on the Way fundraising concerts took place in support of TeachRock. The organization, which was founded by Steven Van Zandt, uses music to produce learning materials that it provides free to educators. The sold-out event raised $85K to support TeachRock classrooms in CT, NY, and NJ, with a second benefit show slated for Saturday night at the Fairfield Theatre Company in Fairfield, CT.
Tim Palmieri served as the musical director on Wednesday (as he will again on Saturday). To accompany the theme of supporting history and language arts teachers who use music in their classrooms, Palmieri crafted a set that mashed Grateful Dead classics with songs that are, in some way, about history.
In addition to the Lotus guitarist, the house band featured Rob Eaton (Dark Star Orchestra), Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits), Noelle Saison (King Saison) and Vinnie Amico (moe.). Corey Glover (Living Colour) performed over the course of the evening, In addition, during the paired versions of “Spanish Moon” and “I Know You Rider” that occurred midway through the set featured surprise appearances by Little Feat’s Scott Sharrard (guitar, vocals) and Tony Leone (drums) along with TeachRock Executive Director Bill Carbone (Max Creek, The Z3) on percussion.
Some photos from the night by Marc Millman appear below the setlist. Tickets for the Saturday event are available here.
