Video: Ryan Adams Busts Out Whiskeytown Material, Toasts to the Security Guard

One of Ryan Adams’ original projects, Whiskeytown, isn’t something you’ll hear him talk about very often, if ever. That’s why when he plays material from his band with Caitlin Cary, it’s supremely noteworthy. Last night in Milwaukee was one of those nights as Adams and his band The Shining busted out “Yesterday’s News” from the band’s 1997 album Stranger’s Almanac.

While he may hate the “alt-country” label put on him from an early age, that influence is certainly there on this song and many of the others on that album (side note: listen to that album), but don’t tell Mr. Adams that.

Additionally, much like he did at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Adams took some time to sing to an audience member. This time, however, that audience member was a security guard at the venue (who, according to Adams, probably has a lot of Electric Light Orchestra records) and apparently an impressionable young lady in the crowd who must’ve been uncomfortable with his language.

“Welcome to cussing, young lady, that’s what rock and roll is for,” he sang before moving back to the security guard. “At first I thought you looked like that dude from Breaking Bad, but I only watched a couple of episodes because it gave me fucking panic attacks.”
