Leftover Salmon: High Country

Sam D’Arcangelo on December 1, 2014

Leftover Salmon have returned with High Country, the follow-up to their 2012 release Aquatic Hitchhiker. Much like their previous effort, which was the band’s first album in eight years and their only full-length to feature all-original material, the latest record finds LoS delivering some new tunes of their own, while also delving into a choice take on Little Feat’s “Six Feet of Snow.” Speaking of Little Feat, High Country is also the band’s first release to include keyboardist Bill Payne, who recently signed on as their newest full-time member. In typical LoS fashion, High Country includes plenty of references to natural beauty and good times, all nicely packaged in the band’s signature “polyethnic Cajun slamgrass” style. Between the instrumental “Thornpipe” (named for the song’s writer and driving force, banjoist Andy Thorn), the lighthearted “Finish Your Beer,” the Payne/Robert Hunter-penned “Bluegrass Pines” and more, the album is as eclectic a collection of Americana tunes as any. It also benefits from an assortment of guest players, including Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin, The Motet’s Joey Porter and Infamous Stringdusters’ Andy Hall, just to name a few.
