Video: Foo Fighters and Rick Neilsen Rock “Stiff Competition” on _Letterman_

Foo Fighters’ week-long Letterman residency rolled on last night as the band collaborated with one of their rock idols in Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Neilsen for a cover of Cheap Trick’s “Stiff Competition.” Neilsen, who is featured in the first episode of the band’s Sonic Highways, premiering tonight on HBO, shared lead vocal duties with Foo drummer Taylor Hawkins (who, in the episode, admits his Cheap Trick fandom to Neilsen) while Grohl took to the drums. The performance, as you’ll see, is simply sensational.

As they have on the previous nights, the Foos also got involved with the comedic aspects of the show, participating in a sketch with Late Show writer Joe Grossman where he pitches ideas to the band. It doesn’t go well, but Pat Smear sure seems to like him. Watch the replay below.

This week has seen the band take on “War Pigs” with Zac Brown, play “Kick It Out” with Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart and bring David Letterman to tears with a pair of performances on Wednesday night including their own “Miracle.” Tonight, the band takes to the stage one last time as they celebrate the premiere of Sonic Highways at 11 PM. Be sure to listen to the first track from Sonic Highways, due out November 10, right here.
