Meet Some of Music’s Biggest Hockey Fans

Rob Slater on October 8, 2014

Tonight, the puck will drop on yet another season of the National Hockey League and fans all over the continent couldn’t be happier. Thousands went to sleep last night dreaming of Lord Stanley’s Cup and the celebrations that follow. A few of those highly invested in the coming hockey months also happen to be some of music’s best and brightest, some of who we outline here.

The crossover between hockey and music runs even deeper than fandom, of course. The L.A. Kings took time recently to pay tribute to late Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman by playing “Spirit of Black” as their warmup song. And who can forget that time the New Jersey Devils got to use U2’s plane? Oh, and Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist is sort of in a rock band with John McEnroe. Nevertheless, here are some of the most passionate hockey fans in the music business.

Trey Anastasio | Philadelphia Flyers

Phish’s frontman makes his Flyers fandom no secret, often donning a jersey on stage when he plays in the city. Anastasio took some time prior to the close of the Spectrum to discuss his favorite Flyers teams and memories from the building.

While last year ended in a seven-game loss to the eventual Eastern Conference Champion New York Ranges, the Flyers look to build on what promises to be a competitive team.

Alice Cooper | Detroit Red Wings/Arizona Coyotes

In an interview with NHL.com, Alice Cooper recounted his youth in Detroit, saying, “I grew up in Hockeytown and when I was ‘this tall,’ my dad would take me to see Gordie Howe and Terry Sawchuk and Ted Lindsay and those guys. Those were rough guys; there was blood on the ice every night. And all I remember about (the old Olympia) was that it smelled like cigars and beer.” So, now we know where Alice Cooper got the inspiration for Welcome to My Nightmare.

Cooper, now an Arizona resident, supports the local club in the (used to be Phoenix) Arizona Coyotes. The team even threw him his very own bobblehead night where he performed a medley of his hits in the arena.

Neil Young | San Jose Sharks/Winnipeg Jets

Neil Young, Canadian, is of course a hockey fan. His favourite team of choice, however, remains a mystery. The guitarist was born in Toronto and used to rock Maple Leafs pants at Crazy Horse shows. Then he was spotted at several San Jose Sharks games. THEN he declared himself a Winnipeg Jets (Atlanta Thrashers) fan.

Nobody really knows for sure, but one thing is clear: Neil Young does what he wants.

Umphrey’s McGee | Chicago Blackhawks/Pittsburgh Penguins

Chicago’s finest are truly a house divided when it comes to the world of sports. This photo clearly demonstrates the separation as bassist Ryan Stasik sticks to his Pittsburgh roots with the Penguins sweater while the other band members rep Chicago. The two teams have met in the Stanley Cup Final just once, when the Penguins swept the Hawks in the ’92 Final.

Most recently, Pittsburgh and Chicago matched up at Soldier Field as a part of the league’s Stadium Series. Chicago won, 5-1. Either way, this year it seems as if both teams are once again playoff bound so we can only hope, for the sake of on-stage chemistry, that these teams avoid each other come playoff time.

Snoop Dogg | Anaheim Ducks

“Yabadaba dizzle.” Never change, Snoop.
