Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard: Django And Jimmie

Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard’s 1983 collaboration, Pancho & Lefty, saluted two mythical characters and became a No. 1 country album. Django And Jimmie nominally bows (only via its title track, really) to two very real inspirations—the über-legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt and country pioneer Jimmie Rodgers—and it, too, has already hit the top. But aside from their remarkable staying power, what’s most striking about this latest get-together of two of country’s most iconic pillars is just how simpatico Nelson and Hag remain. A song such as Haggard’s “Missing Ol’ Johnny Cash,” which invites Bobby Bare along for the ride, might become a maudlin tribute in lesser hands, but it never does. Nelson’s new material—mostly co-written with producer Buddy Cannon—even the potentially silly waltz-time “Alice In Hulaland,” succeeds in accentuating every nuance in that still-remarkable voice. A few retreads— including Haggard’s “Swinging Doors,” Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” and the reminiscence “Family Bible”—are tossed in presumably for familiarity’s sake, but it probably wouldn’t matter what these two guys sang. Just hearing them together is good ol’ country comfort.
