Various Artists: Sincerely, L. Cohen: A Live Celebration of Leonard Cohen

Legendary Canadian singer-songwriter/poet Leonard Cohen passed away in November 2016 and, two months later, Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg hosted an all-star tribute to the musician, bringing together an eclectic group of artists to deliver their own renditions of some of Cohen’s classic material. Sincerely, L. Cohen offers a number of highlights from that night, opening with one of Cohen’s most ubiquitous songs, “Hallelujah,” which receives a stirring, instrumental setting from guitarist Delicate Steve. Cohen’s lyrics rightly take center stage on many of the tracks, with stark cuts from Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo (“Famous Blue Raincoat”), Richard Thompson (“Bird on the Wire,” “The Story of Isaac”), Josh Ritter (“Chelsea Hotel #2”) and Alana Amram (“Suzanne”). Thompson’s son Teddy gives a taste of the stories told during the concert by recounting a conversation with Cohen, while Lenny Kaye opts to read an excerpt from Cohen’s novel Beautiful Losers. Organized by producer Jesse Lauter, City Winery Presents’ Hannah Gold and recent Bob Weir collaborator Josh Kaufman, the evening was clearly a team effort. At various points, the large-scale ensemble included Lauter, Kaufman, The Walkmen’s Walter Martin, Arcade Fire/Antibalas brass player Stuart Bogie, Darkside’s Dave Harrington, bassist Annie Nero, and backing vocalists Jocie Adams, Cassandra Jenkins and Leslie Mendelson. The house band especially shines on the bouncy “Diamonds in the Mine,” led by The Woes’ Osei Essed, a soulful “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye,” featuring Amy Helm, “Memories,” highlighted by swaggering vocals from Deer Tick’s Ian O’Neil and Bogie’s wailing saxophone and a triumphant finale of “So Long, Marianne” led by Okkervil River’s Will Sheff. As writer Justin Joffe explains in the album’s liner notes: “Sentimental and scholarly, full of tearful singalongs and heartfelt remembrance, it was an evening Cohen would have appreciated.”
