Various Artists: Afterschool Special: The 123s of Kid Soul

The Jackson 5 seem like they might have been a one-of-a-kind anomaly. That combination of talent, ambition and parental encouragement is a rarity. But for every pop success on that scale, there are bound to be hundreds of artists striving to replicate the formula. That helps explain the variety of this collection of 19 youth acts ranging from Jackson 5 copycats, to spoken-word proto-rap kid covers of Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” to all kinds of funk and soul-lite takes on puppy love. It’s not all innocent pre-adolescent romance though. Some of these tracks—like the opener “I’m a Special Kid”—sound like the culmination of music-centered youth programs at community centers that are set to tape. One of the high points of the collection is a band called Future Kind who come in with a festive robotic sci-fi version of the participatory “Simon Says,” a kind of no-wave space funk that is equal parts E.S.G. and Sun Ra. Other notable grooves take on issues of the day, like “I’m Free, No Dope for Me,” an anti-drug ditty by the Dynamics, and “We Don’t Dig No Busing,” an anti-busing song by the Greer Brothers. The closing track—a strangely morose piano ode celebrating the life story of James Brown—is deliriously weird. But there’s also solid Motown-worthy soul-pop, like Scott Three’s “Runnin’ Wild (Ain’t Gonna Help You None).” This is a record that is studded with peculiar oddities, tidbits that fans of untutored genius (think: the Shaggs) will appreciate.
