The Cairo Gang: Goes Missing

Though Emmett Kelly releases music on a variety of eclectic indie labels as The Cairo Gang, with the latest album Goes Missing appearing on the Drag City subsidiary God?, his project features far more accessible music than those connections suggest. For example, the record’s most accessible tune, “Ice Fishing,” chimes with ‘60s pop harmonies and a tight ensemble sound that belongs on a power-pop collection next to the Flamin’ Groovies. Marc Riordan plays drums on the track (and on the similarly upbeat “Be What You Are”) with Kelly handling the remaining parts to perfection. Just as the Tiny Rebels EP revealed a tightly compressed sound reminiscent of vintage recordings—right down to the thick, Beatlesque “Rain” bass lines and ringing, Byrds-like 12-string guitars—Goes Missing is dominated by songs like “She Don’t Want You,” “Chains” and “A Heart Like Yours,” where the retro sound never suffers from its retro-ness, but sounds instead like a fresh, inventive way of presenting Kelly’s unique visions. The album’s most unusual track, “Some Other Time,” from the ‘40s Leonard Bernstein musical On The Town, features just Kelly on vocals and Joshua Abrams on bass to best accentuate the preternaturally eerie vibe.
