Way out there on the neo-New Age tip, you’ll find Taylor Haskins & Green Empire’s The Point, a warmly weird album of lava-lamping instrumental space-folk. The group’s sound is a retro-futurist blend of Brett Lanier’s drifting pedal-steel guitar and Haskins’s analog EVI, an electric valve instrument (built by Nyle Steiner) that’s basically a synthesizer played like a trumpet. Accompanied by guitarist Michael Chorney and the rest of Hollar General, Haskins paints sonic impressions of life in the Adirondacks. His synth hovers like a flying saucer above Lake Champlain in “Palisades,” cuts through the murk with tart astringency in “Trickle Charge” and serenades optimistic back-to-thelanders in “Theme for a Farmer.”
