Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings: It’s a Holiday Soul Party

Bill Murphy on December 7, 2015

These days, we tend to write off holiday records as mere novelty throwaways, but there was a time when they often stood on their own as great pieces of music. (James Brown’s Funky Christmas comes to mind.) This latest slab from Sharon Jones and the ever-adaptable Dap-Kings is much more than just a marketing stunt. As if to prove the point, Jones and the band open with a rousingly funky “8 Days (Of Hanukkah),” followed by the poignant “Ain’t No Chimneys in the Projects,” which stresses how all-inclusive the holiday season ought to be. The party continues with “Just Another Christmas Song,” a head-nodder that finds Jones crooning in her natural mid-range, which is when she’s really at her best. Sincerity without irony, in fact, has always propelled SJDK (as hardcore fans know them), and the gospel version of “Silver Bells” just about nails it. Sure, it’s what we’ve come to expect, but as the old saw goes: Why fix what ain’t broke?
