Pops Staples: Don’t Lose This

Jeff Tamarkin on March 31, 2015

A year before his death in 2000, Roebuck “Pops” Staples, the patriarch of the renowned Staple Singers and one of the most distinctive and influential guitarists of the modern era, recorded a number of tracks—his last—and gave them to his daughter Mavis Staples with the instructions, “Don’t lose this.” On the now-finished songs, Mavis, her sisters Yvonne and Cleotha (who died in 2013), Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy (the de facto producer), his son Spencer and other players wisely keep things simple, mostly emphasizing the voices and Pops’ otherworldly guitar. For “Nobody’s Fault But Mine,” that’s all there is—just Pops, no other extraneous sounds needed—and it’s full and satisfying as such. For most of the other tracks, Tweedy and Mavis take a fuller, more celebratory approach. “No News Is Good News” features Jeff and Spencer on bass and drums, respectively, NRBQ’s Scott Ligon on Wurlitzer piano, and the full complement of singing Staples, yet it’s always Pops who shines. Back-to-back set closers “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody” are electrically charged and brimming with life and “Sweet Home,” stripped-down to Pops’ and Mavis’ voices and Tweedy’s guitar, is as sweet and homey as it gets.
