West Coast psychedelic-soul collective Mushroom provides porn-funking musical accompaniment to Black Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver’s 1971 denunciation of acid guru Timothy Leary on the 18-minute title track of Psychedelic Soul on Wax . A musical coda to Mushroom drummer Pat Thomas’ book Listen, Whitey!: The Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975, this potent head trip of a vinyl/digital album also includes a happy-making version of “The Flesh Failures/Let the Sun Shine In,” from the musical Hair, and a pair of dark, sexy improvisations.
