Larry Coryell: Heavy Feel

Jeff Tamarkin on July 1, 2015

Even after nearly half a century and dozens of highly regarded albums, Larry Coryell remains somewhat under the radar and misunderstood. A speed demon on the electric guitar who helped define jazz-rock, he’s equally capable of generating intimate musings on an acoustic. He knows tradition inside-out but always looks ahead. Heavy Feel is something of a sampler of his preferred styles and sounds, nine tunes—all composed by Coryell and/or his band members (saxophonist George Brooks, bassist Matt Montgomery, drummer Mike Hughes) and producer (Gregory Howe)—ranging from the off-kilter swing of “Jailbreak” to the distorted psychedelia of “Heavy Feel” to the Eastern-motif “Foot Path to Oasis,” spotlighting Brooks’ soprano. The title track lives up to its billing, a balls-out, sax-free metallic assault worthy of the pioneering power trios of the late ‘60s.
