Kyle Hollingsworth: Speed Of Life

Sam D’Arcangelo on August 27, 2014

The String Cheese Incident’s Kyle Hollingsworth is in top form on his third solo effort, Speed Of Life. The new album finds the keyboardist teaming up with some of his SCI bandmates, members of The Motet and various other special guests to create one of the most enjoyable funk records of the year. Hollingsworth and company are throwing a party in your ear from the opening notes of “Racer X” to the instrumental dance grooves of “Peregrino” and everything in between. While many of the tracks (“You’ve Got the World,” “Here We Go”) are reminiscent of the keyboardist’s more recent SCI tunes, plenty of them veer in a different direction—whether it is synth-layered electro-pop (“Happening Now”) or LCD Soundsystem-style song intros (“Beautiful People”). Calling this a funk record is even something of an oversimplification—more than anything, Speed Of Life is just plain fun.
