Jessica Lea Mayfield: Sorry Is Gone

When a chance to say screw it and move forward without fearing any repercussions comes along, it’s often hard to know what to do with it. 28-year-old Jessica Lea Mayfield has captured one of those moments on her fourth album Sorry Is Gone, a record she wrote after separating from her spouse and wanting to take her life back. It’s musical therapy with a supporting cast of all-stars around her, including Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, her Elliott Smith-tribute partner Seth Avett and producer John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr.). Throughout her 10-plus year career, sharing feelings has never been an issue for Mayfield, but her records prior to this never had anything so compact, so searing and, at times, so angry. Knowing where those emotions were born from, it’s understandable. But along with a very clear lyrical path, Mayfield’s music here is also the most direct of her career. Her arrangements still have an underlying bluesy element, but there’s a heavy dose of fuzzed-out guitars at certain times and, at others, a Mazzy Star element. Listening to all 11 songs on Sorry Is Gone straight though may make you feel like an outsider eavesdropping on uncomfortable conversations set to music, but being this direct and fired up suits Mayfield well.
