Of course, tenacious Jack Black would want to play Jan Lewan, the Polish Pennsylvania polka prince whose Ponzi scheme led to a jail cell in 2004. Like Lewan, Black has panache to spare. Moreover, he has members of Lewan’s band and arrangements supporting him on the irrepressibly buoyant soundtrack to the new Netflix biopic, The Polka King. While polka greats like Frankie Yankovic and Jimmy Sturr have nothing to worry about, Black provides a splendid clarinet- and accordion-fueled gateway to polka’s warm, corny (“Rappin’ Polka”!?) pleasures.
