Diamond Rugs: Cosmetics

Diamond Rugs was born of a beer-bunkered, after-show convo between former Black Lips guitarist Ian St. Pé, Deer Tick’s John McCauley and Six Finger Satellite’s Bryan Dufresne, so the arrival of their second record simply means that they were having too much fun to stop at one. With a lineup that also includes Dead Confederate’s T. Hardy Morris, Deer Tick’s Robbie Crowell and Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin, it makes sense that the second unravelling of the rug channels everything from Los Lobos quirkiness to Memphis mojo to New York Downtown pop to create an intelligent but unabashed set of party music. “Voodoo Doll” is a sneaky mosh-pit pogofest with goofy Cars-like keyboards; “Thunk” gets all big and brassy; “So What” is about making fast “faster;” and “Blame” channels everything from Gram Parsons to The Blasters. Though McCauley claims that their intent was to “start a punk project where all the songs are about weed,” St. Pé suggests that there’s nothing dumb about Diamond Rugs, from their boozy lyrics to their wild readings of a hundred classic rock-and-roll licks.
