Del McCoury Band: Del and Woody

Woody Gurthrie and Del McCoury are American legends, and although they never knew one another, they’ve managed to collaborate on 12 tracks. Woody wrote the lyrics (some of them in the year Del was born); and Del wrote the music (encouraged by Guthrie’s daughter Nora). Guthrie’s folk credentials often overshadow his country-hillbilly roots, although they’re on full display in these tunes, which document 1930s America through trains, the building of government roads, and that Southern field hand staple, the hoecake. Still, this album owes more to the McCoury canon, spotlighting Del’s high, lonesome vocals, his traditional backing band (which includes his sons), and a front porch vibe that’s playful and timeless. A few tracks linger, among them “Californy Gold”—in true bluegrass fashion, it combines history, a scorned lover, and soaring fiddle and mandolin licks—and “Because You Took Me in Out of the Rain,” a spot-on love song. “Family Reunion” could be the title track though, considering how bluegrass’ favorite patriarch has managed to seamlessly bridge genres, pockets of history and generations.
