Britta Phillips: Luck or Magic

Written and recorded over the course of several years, singer/bassist Britta Phillips’ first solo venture is a remarkably spacious affair, far removed from the celestial trappings of her work with Luna. While her individual efforts have also included the duo Dean & Britta, with husband Dean Wareham, Luck or Magic gives Phillips ample opportunity to fully express her own interests. Consequently, songs such as “Million Dollar Doll,” “Wrap Your Arms Around,” “Drive” and “One Fine Summer Morning” are positively upbeat in execution, propelled by steady rhythms and Phillips’ husky and assertive singing. While the contrast to her day job is profound, it’s all the more surprising when you consider the fact that her original partner in the project, DJ Scott Hardkiss, died suddenly prior to its completion. Credit, then, producer Eric Broucek for stepping in and adding the oomph that allows these songs to soar. Comprising both original material and obscure covers, its dreamy designs find the tone and execution consistently in sync. “Fallin’ in Love” would make an excellent single, its catchy refrain proving an instant inducement. Even the title track, which takes a more pensive pace, boasts its own sumptuous appeal. Be it luck or magic, Phillips’ finesse is evident throughout.
