Bettye LaVette: Worthy

Still on a roll since she came roaring out of obscurity nearly a decade ago, Bettye LaVette continues to sing like her life depends on it. I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise, her 2005 “comeback” album with producer Joe Henry, proved that she could claim any song as her own, with a voice rubbed guttural and raw from years of living, breathing and transmuting the blues. Worthy reunites her with Henry for a spirited session with an ace four-piece band (featuring guitarist Doyle Bramhall II and keyboardist Patrick Warren) that draws its energy from the vintage Southern soul of Stax and Muscle Shoals. LaVette takes the gloves off early, rendering Dylan’s “Unbelievable” and updating the Savoy Brown classic “When I Was a Young Boy” with unbridled sass, but when she demolishes a ballad like The Beatles’ “Wait” or the soul-searing title cut, she leaves a scorched battlefield of heartbreak and, most important, healing in her wake.
