Video Premiere: Phil Cook and The Guitarheels “Lowly Road”

March 10, 2016

In our review of Southland Mission, the solo album from Megafaun multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook, we noted that “Leaving Megafaun’s avant-jam tangents behind, Cook reveals a keen understanding of a variety of pleasing Southern modes, from straight gospel (“Lowly Road”) to straight Allman-soul (“Gone”), but is at his most exciting when chasing his own voice. Co-producing with brother and Megafaun collaborator Brad Cook, Cook follows the Southern vibes into the 21st century, pushing the instrumental breaks of “Anybody Else” into the territory of rustic indie-disco and layering the solo folk-blues “Time to Wake Up” with a rich and friendly atmosphere.”

Today we premiere the video for “Lowly Road,” which features footage taken from Cook’s Southland Mission album release show at the Fletcher Theatre in Raleigh, NC this past September.  Cook tells Relix, “My favorite song is called ‘Low Is The Way’ by The Staple Singers. It’s an earlier cut from their choir robe days and both Pops and Mavis are at their finest. I will always pay tribute to them throughout my life for how much they’ve shown me and moved me. I wrote ‘Lowly Road’ in effort to further that sentiment of humility.”  The upcoming tour dates from Phil Cook and the Guitarheels  appear below the video.
