Umphrey’s McGee Play _Anchor Drops_ in Full in Chattanooga

February 6, 2015

Last night in Chattanooga, Umphrey’s McGee delivered on their promise to play a classic album in full as the band delivered their 2004 effort Anchor Drops in its entirety. This stunt comes the night after the band opened the show with the first two songs from Local Band Does O.K.. The first set featured most of the record in order as they opened with “Plunger” and “Anchor Drops” before “In the Kitchen.” Jennifer Hartswick surprised when she came out on stage for the more delicate “Bullhead City,” a duet with Jake Cinninger. Interestingly enough, Joel Cummins actually tweeted about the possibility of re-recording the song with Jennifer Hartswick, as the original version features the ex-wife of Brendan Bayliss, Elliott Peck, on vocals.

After “Miss Tinkle’s Overture,” “Uncommon” and “JaJunk,” Hartswick returned for a brief detour out of the Anchor Drops world as they busted out Heart’s “Barracuda” with Hartswick once again on vocals. This was the first rendition of the song since 11/12/10 at Bear Creek when Hartswick also sang on the tune and marked just the fourth time in the band’s history they’ve played the popular Heart song.

Set two began with a return to Anchor Drops with an opening “13 Days” (the original setlist called for the end of “JaJunk” to open) before returning into “JaJunk” and playing the album in full all the way until “The Pequod” closer. The band wasted no time after that as “The Triple Wide” and “Cut the Cable” closed the second set. Umphrey’s returned for a single take on Pink Floyd’s “Breathe” to close the show.

Umphrey’s McGee returns to the stage tonight for a sold-out show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN.
