Umphrey’s McGee and Gene Ween to Collaborate at Summer Camp

April 20, 2015

Umphrey’s McGee will officially transform into their alter ego God Boner and welcome Gene Ween to the stage at Summer Camp for a set of Ween classics and choice covers. Dubbed “GodBoner Meets Gene Ween,” the set will take place on Friday night. “God Boner” is a moniker the band gave themselves at the start of their recent New Year’s run at The Tabernacle in Atlanta. The band has previously covered Ween cuts like “Freedom of ’76” and “It’s Gonna Be a Long Light.” They also included the latter into their Halloween mashup “Ace of Long Nights” along with Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades.”

Umphrey’s keyboardist Joel Cummins teased the announcement earlier today, saying that it is something “you could not have predicted in a million years.” The improbability of this collaboration may have to do with some comments made in 2012, when Freeman said that Ween had turned into “some Umphrey’s McGee bullshit.” The band later made light of the comments on stage in Milwaukee after debuting the “Ace of Long Nights” mashup.

Summer Camp has also confirmed a special show from Everyone Orchestra in the Red Barn on Sunday, May 24, which will serve as a benefit to the various charities the festival supports. You can gain entry to the show by participating in the 2015 Festival Non-Profit and Charity Drives.
