Great Peacock‘s new album Gran Pavo Real  is set for release on March 30. The Nashville-based quartet’s sophomore record continues to build on the harmony-laden Americana of Making Ghosts. Today we premiere “Take Me Down” from the forthcoming release. 

The group’s Andrew Nelson tells Relix, “I grew up in a very religious home, and I was not allowed to listen to secular music. We grew up straight middle class and surrounded by really bad contemporary Christian music. The only secular music I was allowed to listen to growing up was the oldies channel. But my dad loved Creedence Clearwater Revival and I think that had a huge impact on me. But what really got me into music was the blues. As a teenager, I really loved John Lee Hooker, Freddy King, BB King, and Buddy Guy. I think you can hear these influences in the new songs. At an early age, I learned how hitting the right chords at the right times could really mess with somebody’s emotions. I saw how music and the performance of it can change the way people think and feel.

“I remember when I was about 14, our TV was in the shop. I was bored, and I didn’t have a CD player or anything. All I had was a little alarm clock that had a radio. I remember flipping through channels and landing on the classic rock station. I heard ‘Free Bird,’ and I had never heard it before. When I heard the guitar solo, I freaked out. I went downstairs and started playing my brother’s guitar when he wasn’t home. I taught myself how to play because I loved that song so much. I would get my ass kicked for breaking his strings, though. I had to learn fast, and I knew I wouldn’t get a guitar from my parents if I didn’t already show some interest or effort.
