Eric Clapton Contemplating Retirement After New Album

May 19, 2016

In a recent interview published in the Chicago Tribune, legendary guitarist Eric Clapton talked about his new album, I Still Do, which will be released tomorrow, along with a mysterious guest on the record, why Justin Bieber is growing on him and how he “kind of might be saying goodbye” with this new record.

Clapton confronted the rumors that the guest artist on his new album, credited as “Angelo Mysterioso,” was in fact an old recording of the late Beatle George Harrison, who used the pseudonym L’Angelo Mysterioso for his work on the song “Badge” on the 1969 Cream album Goodbye due to contractual obligations that prevented him from using his proper name. The real musician behind the moniker is not Harrison, but another unnamed artist whose record company didn’t want him or her credited on the album.

Clapton, who has three daughters ages 11 to 14, also spoke on his initial apprehension at them listening to Justin Bieber, but eventually came around to the world-renowned pop star, saying of his music, “It’s got some substance now.” On the topic of the evolving world of music, Clapton also noted that it’s getting harder for him to keep up with the explosive guitarist he used to be, saying, “I can’t go to that place anymore. I have to work hard now to get to the place where it’s absolutely free. I was a young man with a passion. I don’t know that guy anymore at all. But I know where the music came from and I can tap into a point where I think it’s OK.”

“I kind of might be saying goodbye,” Clapton concludes, adding, “But I’ve been doing that for a while.”
