Carrie Brownstein and St. Vincent Join Pearl Jam in Dallas

November 16, 2013

Pearl Jam returned to the stage at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX for the second leg of their Lightning Bolt tour that will take the band through the Southwest and West Coast over the next month. Tonight, the band played through yet another marathon set, tallying 33 songs by night’s end. Continuing their theme of walking out to the music of “Pendulum,” the band moved through new and old cuts such as “Nothingman,” “Can’t Keep” and “Lightning Bolt” in addition to a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive.”

After including familiar Pearl Jam staples “Jeremy,” “Better Man,” “Why Go” and “Porch,” the band surprised the Texas crowd in the second encore when they busted out a cover of The Who’s “The Real Me” and then invited Carrie Brownstein and St. Vincent on stage for a rendition of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” St. Vincent took the lead vocals on the song while Redmond, Washington native Brownstein played guitar. The Portlandia star is also known for her work with rock bands Sleater-Kinney and Wild Flag.

Brownstein was a part of Pearl Jam’s Lightning Bolt promotional cycle, as the actress/musician sat down with the band for a lengthy interview in anticipation of the new record. Also taking part in the interview process was filmmaker Judd Apatow, former NFL player Steve Gleason and professional surfer Mark Richards. You can watch Brownstein’s interview as well as clips from the others on Relix.com.

In other Pearl Jam news, drummer Matt Cameron announced he will tour with the band in 2014, leaving Soundgarden to find a replacement drummer for their shows next year. Pearl Jam’s tour continues tonight with a show at Oklahoma City’s Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Check out two videos from last night’s show, including St. Vincent and Carrie Brownstein’s appearance as well as Pearl Jam flipping the stage during the encore and performing “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” to the crowd seated behind the stage. The latter of which begins with a great story of Pearl Jam’s early days in Dallas.
