Watch The National Cover “Peggy-O” with Josh Kaufman at Eaux Claires

While The National won’t perform at this weekend’s Eaux Claires Festival, Aaron and Bryce Dessner will bring their massive Grateful Dead tribute album Day of the Dead to life with the first live performance of the songs with a slew of special guests.

Dessner spoke to Relix about the upcoming performance, saying, “It is the one big performance of that music, and it feels very connected to Dark Was the Night and to the community aspect of what we want to do with this festival, that there’s music and making friends and people you hope to collaborate with, and it’s all for a good cause. Sharing that feels like the right thing to do.”

“This is a 300-year old song, but we know it from something else,” Dessner introduces the cover of “Peggy-O” at Eaux Clares 2015, one of two songs The National contributed to Day of the Dead, the other being a somber, emotional reading of “Morning Dew.” For this particular performance, the band welcomed Josh Kaufman on stage, a future collaborator on Bob Weir’s newest solo record Blue Mountain
