We’ve Found The Only Person in the World Who Hates Dave Grohl

July 11, 2017

Dave Grohl is widely considered one of the most-liked guys in rock and roll. Nobody has a bad thing to say about the wild, affable, always-smiling frontman of the Foo Fighters and former Nirvana drummer.

Nobody, except William Goldsmith.

For those of you who might not know Goldsmith, he was the founding member of Seattle group Sunny Day Real Estate and together with Nate Mendel bolted to join Grohl as the rhythm section for the Foo Fighters. Mendel remains as the band’s bassist today while Goldsmith departed after a rift with Grohl during the recording sessions for The Colour and the Shape, where the story goes Grohl re-recorded all of Goldsmith’s drum parts without his knowledge.

In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Goldsmith detailed the struggles he faced following that split and the resentment he still holds for his former bandmate, including the notion that he wished he never met Grohl in the first place. “That feeling might change if we actually sat down and talked,” Goldsmith said. “But that hasn’t happened yet.”

Goldsmith recalled the strenuous recording sessions for The Colour and the Shape, saying that he “gave everything I could. I couldn’t believe at the end of it everything was done and I had got through it. But I knew something wasn’t right.”

While a poor choice of words, Goldsmith said he felt “creatively raped” after Grohl redid all of the drum parts. “They basically dragged me through the coals. It was brutal.” As for his personal thoughts on Grohl, he related him to a schoolyard bully. “He was a bit like the kid who is popular but is mean and everyone likes them,” he said.
