‘Westworld’ Closed Its First Season with Another Gut-Wrenching Radiohead Cover

December 5, 2016

HBO‘s latest phenomenon Westworld closed out its riveting first season last night but not before composer Ramin Djawadi (who also works on Game of Thrones along with numerous major films) inserted one last nod to one of his (and Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan) favorite bands, Radiohead.

To complement the final scene [NO SPOILERS HERE DO NOT WORRY], a gut-wrenching version of the OK Computer anchor, “Exit Music (For a Film)” played the show out. The selection is just another in a long line of poignant musical selections along the way as Djawadi, Nolan and creator Lisa Joy used tunes from the Rolling Stones (“Paint It Black”), Soundgarden (“Black Hole Sun”) and The Cure (“A Forest”) to aid the show’s incredibly intricate storytelling.

This final tune is no different, as the song’s lyrics fit the narrative: “Wake from your sleep, the drying of your tears. Today we escape, we escape. Pack and get dressed, before your father hears us, before all hell breaks loose.”

The Radiohead nod is just another in a long line of their tunes used in the show, with previous episodes incorporating “Fake Plastic Trees” and “No Surprises.” Djawadi told Pitchfork that he is in fact a huge Radiohead fan. “Their lyrics tend to be very poetic as well,” he said. “I think it’s a great fit.”
