Wayne Coyne, Members of Kings of Leon, Hanson Bid Farewell to Kevin Durant

Yesterday, Kevin Durant won the 2017, ’18, ’19, ’20 and ’21 NBA championships with the Golden State Warriors, as he announced he was teaming up with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and the rest of the 73-win Warriors that inexplicably came up short at the end of the season.

Musicians are people too, and some are people who watch sports. In Oklahoma City, Durant was a fixture in the community both on and off the court, making this a deeply personal decision and one that affected the entire community. When he made the announcement, several  Oklahoma-based musicians commented on it via their respective social channels. Among them, The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne who has met Durant on at least one occasion back in 2014 where the two snapped the above picture.

“It was amazing having you in our city,” Coyne wrote on his Instagram. “You did so much for us. Good luck in your next chapter.” Others weren’t as forgiving, as Kings of Leon’s Nathan Followill simply admitted he could “never get past the Longhorn thing anyways.” Followill is of course a diehard Oklahoma Sooners fan, a school that doesn’t play very nice with Durant’s University of Texas. Isaac Hanson also weighed in, saying while he has great respect for Durant, he “would be lying if I didn’t say this hurts.”

The one thing we all have in common: Sports can hit us in the feels at any moment.
