Warren Haynes’ upcoming solo record Ashes and Dust features a whole gaggle of special guests including Railroad Earth, Oteil Burbridge, Marc Quinones, Grace Potter and others. As Haynes shares in the vignette below, one of the tunes “Spots of Time” was written with Phil Lesh. “We were in the studio together doing something and Phil told me he had his music that he’d like me to write lyrics to,” Haynes said.

After Haynes wrote the lyrics to the song along with Lesh’s music, he took it into the studio with a special arrangement inspired by the version of the song that the Allman Brothers played. Along with fellow ABB mates Burbridge and Quinones, Haynes mixed in the Railroad Earth crew to create a hybrid version of the song. “I think what came out was wonderful,” Haynes said.

Ashes and Dust is due out July 24. Watch Haynes discuss the song below.
