Watch: Umphrey’s McGee Pay Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan with “Lenny”

Rob Slater on August 27, 2015

There is no doubt that Stevie Ray Vaughan helped shape some of today’s best guitarists, having a heavy influence on players like John Mayer, Trey Anastasio and many others. Twenty five years ago today, Vaughan and others boarded a helicopter following a gig at Alpine Valley with Eric Clapton. Due to heavy fog and poor visibility, the helicopter crashed, killing all on board.

Vaughan was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by John Mayer, someone who has extensively modeled himself after the famed guitarist. He was also honored with a performance that featured Mayer, Gary Clark Jr. and many others at the ceremony. As it relates to those bands we here at Relix hold dear, Umphrey’s McGee has dipped into SRV’s extensive catalog to make his tune “Lenny” their own. Overall, the band has played the song 44 times, with it first debuting in 2000 in their birthplace of South Bend, IN.

Watch Umphrey’s honor the legendary SRV with their stellar rendition of “Lenny.”
