Watch: Randy Newman, Jeff Tweedy, Michael Stipe, Willie Nelson and More Deliver Epic Send-Off For Stephen Colbert

How do you close a show that’s seen its host broadcast live from Iraq, take on Twitter (remember #CancelColbert?) and birth “truthiness”? Well, The Colbert Report did it last night as an A-list cast of celebrities and entertainers alike showed up to serenade the host in a final singalong of Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again.”

Leading the proceedings was Randy Newman, along with Colbert and pal Jon Stewart. Throughout, the likes of Jeff Tweedy, Willie Nelson, Michael Stipe, Cyndi Lauper, Jon Batiste more all appeared in various groups to sing the song with celebrities such as Bryan Cranston (and a chained up Vince Gilligan), President Bill Clinton, Jeff Daniels, Keith Olbermann, Katie Couric, Charlie Rose, James Franco, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Patrick Stewart, George Lucas and an unusual amount of characters from Sesame Street. Mark Cuban was also there, and actually closed the Rajon Rondo trade in the green room.

On a more somber note, fans may have recognized Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Holland, 1945” used as the final credits rolled. As Slate pointed out, the song may hold close meaning to the host, as he mentioned a verse of the song in a New York Times piece when discussing the plane crash that killed his father and two brothers closest to him. Colbert has also used the song in past episodes of the show and between segments.
