Watch Phish’s Beautiful Fleet Foxes Opener and Massive “Carini” at MSG

July 27, 2017

The surprises kept coming as Phish approaches the halfway point of their Baker’s Dozen run. The group has yet to repeat a song through five nights and that is partially thanks to performances like the below, an opening acapella cover debut of Fleet Foxes’ “White Winter Hymnal.”

Never played before, Phish did the delicate Robin Pecknold song some serious justice with a beautiful, well-rehearsed and thoughtful version of the song. There’s a reason you don’t hear a whole lot about bands covering Fleet Foxes, but this cover was given proper care by the members of Phish, particularly Anastasio who delivers a standout vocal performance.

That was the first set, the second set found Phish doing what they do best. In a set that would ultimately revive Prince’s “1999” for the first time in nearly 20 years, the band kicked off the set with a ferocious “Carini” that showcased all of the best qualities of the song with dark, thematic jamming throughout.

Watch both set openers below.
