Watch Phil Lesh Team Up with Cass McCombs, Grahame Lesh and More for Covers of Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles

January 10, 2018

Last night, Phil Lesh played the second of four free “Dead of Winter” shows at his own Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA, setting up in the bar with his son and guitarist Grahame Lesh, singer-songwriter Cass McCombs, guitarist Ross James and drummer Alex Koford for a nine-song set that featured some Grateful Dead favorites and select covers.

The quintet seemed to be having a blast playing together, switching off on vocals and trading solos while facing each other and seemingly playing for one another as much as they were playing for the gathered Tuesday-night crowd. In the first-set video below, captured by Deadheadland, watch the collective run through tunes like “Fire on the Mountain,” “Friend of the Devil,” “Me and My Uncle” and “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo,” along with McCombs’ own “Sooner Cheat Death Than Fool Love,” a raucous cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Are You Experienced” and a closer of The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”

Lesh continues the free Dead of Winter shows tonight and tomorrow at Terrapin Crossroads.
