Watch One of Charles Bradley’s Final Performances at Pickathon 2017

December 21, 2017

Seeing a Charles Bradley concert was akin to staring at a beacon of hope and light in whatever dark times you might be going through. The singer, known as “The Screaming Eagle of Soul,” was recognized for his immense talent and spirit late in life–his debut album came when he was 62–but his years recording and performing under the banner of Brooklyn’s Daptone Records left an impact on all those within earshot nonetheless.

Bradley passed away earlier this year at the age of 68 after a lengthy battle with cancer that saw him leave and return to the road before the end. This week, NPR released pro-shot video of one of his final performances–the penultimate, to be exact–when Bradley and his band played at Oregon’s Pickathon Music Festival. The video, which shows the group playing Bradley’s “Lovin’ You Baby,” captures a little of what the soul belter could bring to the stage: unbridled emotion, unabashed stage antics, unexpected costumes and, above all, a message of love, which Bradley always embodied on stage and off.
