Watch Michael Stipe, Stephen Colbert and James Franco Send Off 2016 with “It’s the End of the Year As We Know It”

December 16, 2016

R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night, and the host treated the singer to a new rendition of his band’s hit “It’s the End of the World As We Know It,” changing the lyrics to make “It’s the End of the Year As We Know It,” including various culture and world references from the rollercoaster that was 2016.

Stipe didn’t seem to have much interest in performing the song, so Colbert took the lead on verses, with Stipe eventually coming around to help out on the chorus. Another guest from the night, James Franco, also came out to join in on the firework-backed finale to the tune. Watch the cathartic rendition below.
