Watch Luther Dickinson Talk Playing with Phil Lesh, Finding the Grateful Dead, His Upbringing and Much More

November 3, 2016

Luther Dickinson sat down with Apparently It Matters for a lengthy interview that covered numerous topics including playing with Phil Lesh, how he came to find the Grateful Dead’s music and a good deal on his father and subsequent upbringing into the rock and roll world.

“He listened to it constantly,” Dickinson said of Chris Robinson, who he credits to really tuning him into the Grateful Dead during Luther’s time in the Black Crowes. When asked about the biggest challenges in playing the Dead’s music, Dickinson remarked that he “can’t sing Jerry.” He added, “Jerry was a tenor, I’m a baritone. I can sing Pigpen!” He also jokes about blowing a change during a Phil Lesh & Friends show at the Capitol Theatre where him and Anders Osborne both missed a riff during “Ramblin’ Man.”
