Watch Jason Isbell Nod to Gregg Allman with “Whipping Post” Debut

June 18, 2017

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit rolled into Asheville, NC last night and finished their show with a debut of the Allman Brothers’ “Whipping Post,” possibly a better-late-than-never tribute to the late Gregg Allman.

Isbell has previously praised the Allman Brothers, talking to Relix about his connection to the Brothers via FAME Studios which famously housed Duane Allman in his early days. He admits he didn’t view ABB in the vein of “Southern rock,” adding that they were “on a bit of a musical journey and that was really something that Southern rock didn’t necessarily embrace. That was more of an improvisational, sort of Grateful Dead influence.”

How did they find that influence deep in the South? “Mushrooms,” Isbell joked. “Magical mushrooms that grew out of cow shit in Macon, GA.”

Watch Isbell play “Whipping Post” for the first time with his band in Asheville.
