Last night Madison Square Garden hosted a massive clash of genres as the hip hop and rock worlds collided in one of the more unique collaborations we may see all year. First, during their opening set, emerging hip hop duo Run the Jewels brought out Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack De La Rocha for “Close Your Eyes (and Count to Fuck)” from their latest release (which De La Rocha raps on). Then, during his headlining set, Jack White brought out A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip for White’s own Lazaretto track “Black Bat Licorice” and Tribe’s “Excursions” from their landmark LP The Low End Theory.

The show marked White’s return to the famed arena for the first time since 2007, when he headlined it as a part of The White Stripes, and featured a bevy of new material from his latest Lazaretto and Blunderbuss. The guitarist also mixed in a fair amount of material from his time in The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, who recently reunited in Nashville for a pair of tunes. However, the surprise collaboration in the encore left the sold-out crowd shocked, as White and Q-Tip both stepped outside their comfort zones, paying tribute to each of their impressive catalogs.

This isn’t the first time rock and hip hop have come together. Just a few notable occurances include Jay Z’s now famous sit-in with Phish in 2004 as well Run the Jewels’ El-P and Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor recording together. Kanye West and Justin Vernon are also longtime collaborators and West recently released a song that featured Paul McCartney.
