Watch: Eddie Vedder Sends Letterman Off with Stunning Version of “Better Man”

May 19, 2015

Out of all the musical tributes to David Letterman as he calls it quits after 33 years tomorrow, Eddie Vedder may have just topped them all. Last night, the Pearl Jam frontman paid his final visit to Late Show and performed “Better Man” with Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra. To mark the occasion, he altered the words at the end to say “Love you, Dave.” As the heartwarming and incredibly stunning rendition came to a close, Letterman hugged his old friend and said, “this is one we’ll remember.”

Vedder has a long history with Late Show, performing multiple times with Pearl Jam and in other formats. His most notable appearance may have been his first one in 1996 when he appeared to sing along to “Black” with the house band. Before that, Letterman incorporated the Pearl Jam song into his nightly routine, often singing the chorus. Finally, Vedder showed up to sing the song with the band.

Replay the performance below.

And now, Vedder’s first appearance on the show.
