Watch: Darryl Dawkins Thinks Stevie Wonder Can See

Few people have lived up to their nickname quite like Darryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins. The imposing big man for Philadelphia in the 70s and 80s, Dawkins became the reason the NBA adopted breakaway rims as he shattered the backboard on two occasions in the late 70s. The man threw it down with such force that the league had to adapt to him.

One of the more unknown aspects of Dawkins’ nickname was the fact that Stevie Wonder himself first coined the term. As Dawkins explains below in an appearance on ESPN’s Highly Questionable, Wonder walked into the locker room and simply brushed his face and uttered “Chocolate Thunder.”

When pressed on how Wonder could possibly know he was chocolate, Dawkins recalled a story about Ray Charles and summed it up with: “I think they can see.” Yet another soldier in the war against Wonder’s sight.

To Wonder’s credit, he’s had some fun with the rumors that he isn’t totally blind, first addressing it on his recent Songs in the Key of Life tour and then appearing on Late Show with David Letterman to present a top ten list of advantages to being blind. Replay Dawkins’ interview below.
