Watch Bruce Springsteen and Michael Stipe Join Patti Smith at NYC’s Beacon Theatre

April 24, 2018

Iconic poet and singer-songwriter Patti Smith performed at the Beacon Theatre in her hometown of New York on Monday night, highlighting a premiere of new concert documentary Horses: Patti Smith and Her Band at the venue with a six-song offering. Just a couple days after making a surprise appearance at Stephen Stills’ annual Light Up the Blues benefit for Autism Speaks in LA, Smith welcomed her own surprise guests at the Beacon, Bruce Springsteen and R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe.

As Brooklyn Vegan notes, Smith and Her Band’s set featured “Land” and “Gloria” from Horses, her songs “Dancing Barefoot” and “Pissing in a River,” and a cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth.” For the final two songs, Smith introduced her friend Bruce Springsteen, and the two collaborated on “Because the Night,” a tune the two wrote together. Stipe then joined the band on stage for “People Have the Power,” preceded by a call to action by Smith for young people to make change in the world.
