Bob Dylan returned to Late Show with David Letterman for the first time since 1993, shortly after Late Show debuted, to perform on the host’s penultimate show. To set up the performance, Letterman shared a story about riding around with his son Harry and reminding him of “the two most important things to know in the world. One, you have to be nice to other people and the greatest songwriter of modern times is Bob Dylan.” He added, “That’s all you need to know in life.”

With that, Dylan hit the stage for an appropriately somber yet powerful “The Night We Called It a Day” which closed out a show that featured appearances from longtime guest Bill Murray, Regis Philbin and deli owner Rupert Jee, who reflected on his famed comedy bit with the host over the years.

Dylan first appeared on Letterman’s NBC late night show in 1984 and has appeared various times over the years. Watch his final performance below.
