Watch Billy Joel Perform While Wearing a Yellow Star of David at Madison Square Garden

August 22, 2017

Billy Joel returned to his home away from home last night for his latest headlining gig at New York’s Madison Square Garden, and the iconic singer-songwriter opted to make a strong yet silent statement on the recent high-profile activities of the neo-nazi and white nationalism movements, specifically the Charlottesville protest that left one counter-protester dead and many more injured.

As People reports, Joel returned to the Garden stage for a multi-song encore last night wearing two yellow Stars of David, one on his front and one on the back of his jacket. The patches are a reference to the same insignias that Jewish people were forced to wear before and during the Holocaust and World War II to denote their heritage and culture.

Joel identifies as culturally Jewish, having both Jewish parents, but, as People notes, has previously stated his dislike for performers including political statements in their shows, telling Rolling Stone, “I have a right to believe in my own political point of view, but I try not to get up on a soapbox and tell people how to think.”

Joel obviously changed his mind before last night. Below, watch the Piano Man sing his classic hit “Uptown Girl,” which kicked off the four-song encore.
