The Stray Birds’ forthcoming album, Magic Fire, set for release on August 19 via Yep Roc marks the first time that the Americana/folk trio worked with an outside producer, as they collaborated with Larry Campbell.

The group’s Charlie Muench tells Relix, “Even before we stepped up to the microphones we knew that there was little that was out of the question. Larry’s refrain of “you can’t take it out until you put it in” fostered a wide open approach that instigated creativity. He is an incredibly encouraging collaborator, director, and musician”.

Today we premiere a video that captures the process of creating the new album. Maya de Vitry adds, “The idea that listeners will get to step inside of this music now feels like an incredible secondary gift, because I really feel that we were singing for ourselves, and just embracing these songs in the moment. Larry Campbell brought such a warmth and a sincerity and a playfulness, along with this feeling of possibility— the possibility of making music that feels so good. In those hills and valleys along the Hudson, there is quite a history of making music that feels good. One night, our band and Larry and Justin and some of the family went out to an Indian buffet in another nearby small town. Elliot Landy was also at the buffet that night— the man who captured some of the most iconic photographs of The Band. For Larry, it was another night of running into an old friend in upstate New York. For The Stray Birds, I think it felt like we were suddenly close enough to feel the warmth of the fire— inspiration was catching up with us, over heaping plates of curry”.
