Milwaukee-based folk trio Dead Horses released their third record last month. Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo) produced Cartoon Moon, which also includes a guest appearance by Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers) on “Ain’t Got Time.” The record has been hailed for its “terrific batch of pensive, reflective tunes that alternate between breezy and introspective.”

Dead Horses, which came together in 2010, features vocalist and songwriter Sarah Vos along with Peter Raboin (mandolin, guitar) and Daniel Wolff on double bass. The group, first game together in Oshkosh, WI, where Vos’ father served as preacher. The group  has appeared with Trampled by Turtles and Elephant Revival, while also making the rounds on the festival circuit.

Today we premiere the official video for “Long Way Down” which was directed by videographer Louie Fisher.  Vos Tells Relix, “”I have a vivid memory of sitting down to write ‘Long Way Down.’ I was living in a rundown studio space above a popular cafe in downtown Oshkosh, and I would watch folks from my window walking up and down Main Street. At the time I was dealing with my own feelings of isolation, and I felt compassion for them. They moved me. This was all a few years ago now, so approaching the video at this point in time, when life is on the upswing, was one of the more difficult things I’ve had to do. I think Louie [director] tastefully realized the duality of past and present, as well as loneliness and the feeling of internal struggle shown through physical dialogue. It gets to a pretty dark place, but it’s a real thing that happens to real people. There are nine other songs on Cartoon Moon to remind us all of the light in this life.
